The 2,85 km long Road Tunnels connecting African Mainland with the Sinai Peninsular were constructed with Hydroshield TBMs. The geological conditions are 500-600m of soft clay at both tunnel ends, 500-600m of sand in the adjacent areas and approximately 500m of sand / hard clay in the central area under the Suez Canal. The max. hydrostatic pressure was 5 bar at the crown. To cope with these boundary conditions 2 Herrenknecht Mixshields with a diameter of 13,02m were commissioned. The tunnel lining consisting of precast concrete segments with a thickness of 600mm and a ring split of 8 segments and a key stone was manufactured in a dedicated precast factory on site. The intermediate road deck inside the tunnels was built by an innovative precast solution.
